Description

A festive, eye catching twist on classic brownies, these Green Velvet Brownies bake up rich, fudgy, and lightly cakey, then get topped with a smooth cream cheese frosting. They come together fast with melted chocolate and butter, and the bright green batter makes them perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, holidays, and party trays. Slice into 16 squares, add sprinkles if you want, and serve once fully cooled for clean cuts and the best texture.

Ingredients

Scale

¾ cup semi sweet chocolate chips

¾ cup butter

2 cups sugar

4 large eggs

1½ cups all purpose flour

1 (1 oz) bottle green liquid food coloring

1½ tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

⅛ tsp salt

8 oz cream cheese, softened

3 Tbsp butter, softened

1½ cups powdered sugar

⅛ tsp salt for frosting

1 tsp vanilla extract for frosting

Instructions

1. Heat oven to 350°F and line a 9 inch square pan with foil, lightly greasing it.

2. Melt the chocolate chips and butter together in the microwave, stirring until smooth.

3. Stir in the sugar, then mix in the eggs one at a time.

4. Add the flour, green coloring, baking powder, vanilla, and salt, mixing just until combined.

5. Spread batter in the pan and bake until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs, about 44 to 48 minutes. Cool completely.

6. Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then blend in the powdered sugar and salt. Mix in the vanilla.

7. Lift the cooled brownies from the pan, frost the top, cut into 16 squares, and add sprinkles if desired.

Notes

A metal pan helps the brownies bake evenly.

Using the whole bottle of coloring makes the brightest green.

Bittersweet chocolate can replace chocolate chips if chopped finely.

Cut brownies keep 1 to 2 days in an airtight container; uncut brownies keep up to 4 days.

Unfrosted brownies can be wrapped tightly and frozen for up to 3 months; thaw before frosting and slicing.
