Ingredients
6 medium baking apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 cup water or apple juice
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt (for batter)
3/4 cup milk
5 tablespoons melted butter
Ground cinnamon for topping
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. In a saucepan, whisk water or juice, brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
3. Add apple slices and cook over medium heat for 3–5 minutes until softened and sauce thickens.
4. Pour apple mixture evenly into the prepared dish.
5. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, white sugar, baking powder, and salt.
6. Add milk and melted butter, stirring just until combined. Do not overmix.
7. Spread batter evenly over apples and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
8. Bake for 38–40 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the topping comes out clean.
9. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream.
