Description
A quick, addictive holiday treat made with saltine crackers, buttery toffee, melted chocolate, and optional toppings. Also known as “Christmas Crack,” this sweet-salty candy is perfect for gifting and sharing.
Ingredients
1½ sleeves salted saltine crackers (about 45 crackers)
1 cup (226 g) salted butter
1 cup (200 g) tightly packed brown sugar
2 cups (350 g) semisweet chocolate chips
½ cup (50 g) chopped pecans or other desired topping
Optional: flaky sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a cookie sheet with foil and lightly grease it. Arrange saltine crackers salted side up.
2. In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Bring to a full boil and let it boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
3. Remove from heat and pour toffee mixture over crackers, spreading evenly.
4. Bake for 5 minutes until the toffee is bubbly.
5. Remove from oven, turn oven off, and sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
6. Return to oven for 2 minutes to soften chocolate, then spread melted chocolate evenly.
7. Top with chopped pecans and optional flaky sea salt.
8. Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes until set.
9. Break or cut into rustic pieces for serving.
Notes
Do not stir the toffee while it boils.
If chocolate chips don’t melt properly, melt them in the microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring between each.
Clean hardened toffee from pans by boiling water until residue loosens.
Store in the refrigerator for a firm snap or at room temperature for a softer texture.
