Description
Colorful 4th Of July Rice Krispie Treats made with chewy marshmallow cereal layers, red and blue colors, patriotic sprinkles, and creamy frosting filling.
Ingredients
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
14 cups mini marshmallows
1/4 teaspoon red gel food coloring
1/4 teaspoon blue gel food coloring
10 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Patriotic sprinkles
1 can white frosting, 16 ounces
Instructions
1. Grease two 9×13-inch pans with nonstick spray.
2. Divide the butter and marshmallows evenly between two microwave-safe bowls.
3. Heat each bowl separately in the microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds until smooth and melted.
4. Mix red food coloring into one bowl and blue coloring into the other until evenly tinted.
5. Split the cereal evenly between the bowls and gently fold until coated.
6. Press each colored mixture into its own prepared pan in an even layer without compacting too firmly.
7. Top with patriotic sprinkles and let sit about 30 minutes until set.
8. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes from both pans.
9. Pipe frosting onto the plain side of half the stars, then sandwich with the remaining stars so the sprinkle sides face outward.
Notes
Fresh marshmallows melt more smoothly and create a better texture.
A saucepan on low heat can be used instead of a microwave by melting the butter first, then stirring in the marshmallows until smooth.
Lightly spray hands with cooking spray before pressing the mixture into pans to reduce sticking.
Leftover scraps can be cut into smaller shapes for bite-sized treats.
Allow treats to fully set before cutting for cleaner shapes.
