Description
Soft baked American Flag Donuts with vanilla cake texture and festive red, white, and blue candy melt decorations. Perfect for 4th of July parties, cookouts, and patriotic dessert tables.
Ingredients
1 cup (120g) all purpose flour
3 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
6 tbsp milk
1 large egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract or other flavored extract
3 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
1 bag red candy melts
1 bag white candy melts
1 bag blue candy melts
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F and lightly grease a donut pan.
2. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in one bowl. In another bowl whisk milk, egg, vanilla, and oil. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
3. Transfer batter to a piping bag or zip-top bag with the corner cut off. Pipe batter into donut molds about two-thirds full and tap the pan gently to remove air bubbles.
4. Bake for about 10 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.
5. Melt white candy melts and let them cool slightly before dipping each donut. Place dipped donuts on a rack and allow coating to partially set.
6. Melt blue candy melts, cool slightly, and pipe a blue rectangle onto the upper left side of each donut. Use a toothpick if needed to spread evenly.
7. Melt red candy melts, cool slightly, and pipe stripes across the donuts.
8. Pipe small white dots onto the blue section to resemble stars. Let decorations harden fully before serving or storing.
Notes
Candy melts can be melted in the microwave or on the stovetop.
For microwaving, heat each color separately at 60% power in short intervals, stirring between each round.
Let melted candy cool for several minutes before decorating so it is not too thin or runny.
Alternative extracts like lemon or almond can be added for different donut flavors.
Store finished donuts in an airtight container.
Use squeeze bottles for cleaner stripes and dots.
Donuts can be frozen before decorating. Cool completely, separate with parchment or foil, wrap tightly, and freeze.
Thaw donuts in the fridge or at room temperature before decorating.
Do not freeze decorated donuts because the candy coating may crack after thawing.
