Notes
Use fresh, ripe fruit instead of frozen fruit. Frozen fruit can release excess liquid and make the salad watery and soft.
Dry washed fruit thoroughly before assembling the salad.
Bananas, apples, and raspberries soften or deteriorate more quickly. Add them only shortly before serving if using.
Green or red seedless grapes both work well.
Blackberries can replace some or all of the blueberries.
Regular oranges can replace the mandarin oranges.
Bananas can replace mango for a creamy texture, but add them immediately before serving.
You can buy pineapple and mango a few days early and let them ripen at room temperature.
Place pineapple or mango in a brown paper bag to help speed up ripening.
For outdoor serving in warm weather, keep the salad chilled by placing the bowl over ice or using a chilled bowl or ice mat.
You can cut and refrigerate the fruit in a covered container for up to 24 hours ahead.
Add the honey-lime dressing shortly before serving for the freshest texture.
For the best results, prepare the fully dressed fruit salad no more than about 4 hours before serving.
Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
Blend overly softened leftover fruit into smoothies.
