Description
Sweet, tangy Blueberry Lemonade made with blueberries, fresh lemons, sugar, and water. A bright summer drink for parties, cookouts, and warm afternoons.
Ingredients
1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
1/2 cup sugar, or to taste
Juice of 4 to 5 lemons, about 3/4 cup lemon juice
Peels of 2 to 3 lemons, optional
1 cup water, for syrup
4 cups cold water, for lemonade
Optional garnish: mint, lemon slices or peels, blueberries
Instructions
1. Juice the lemons and reserve the juice.
2. Place blueberries, sugar, 1 cup water, and about half of the lemon peels in a saucepan.
3. Heat for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the blueberries burst.
4. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
5. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids.
6. Pour the strained syrup into a large pitcher.
7. Add the lemon juice and 4 cups cold water, then mix well.
8. Refrigerate until chilled or serve immediately over ice.
9. Garnish with mint, lemon slices, lemon peels, or blueberries if desired.
Notes
Lemon peels are optional, but they add stronger lemon flavor.
For a tarter drink, add up to 1/4 cup extra lemon juice.
Fresh or frozen blueberries both work well.
You can turn this into a cocktail by adding vodka, rum, or whiskey.
This Blueberry Lemonade keeps for about 1 week in the refrigerator.
Alternative sweeteners such as honey, agave, or sugar substitutes can be used.
