Description
A quick and creamy Crab Salad made with tender crab meat, crisp celery, shallot, fresh herbs, and a bright lemon Dijon dressing. Ready in 25 minutes with no cooking required when using ready-to-eat crab.
Ingredients
⅔ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
½ teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
Pinch freshly ground black pepper
1 pound crab meat or imitation crab meat, roughly chopped
2 celery ribs, finely diced
2 tablespoons shallot, finely diced
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chives, or dill, roughly chopped
Instructions
1. Combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, paprika, kosher salt, and black pepper in a bowl. Stir until smooth.
2. Place the crab meat, finely diced celery, and shallot in a large mixing bowl.
3. Add the creamy lemon Dijon dressing to the crab mixture.
4. Gently fold everything together until the dressing evenly coats the crab and vegetables.
5. Add the fresh parsley, chives, or dill and gently mix again.
6. Serve immediately or refrigerate until chilled before serving.
Notes
Prepare the dressing shortly before assembling the Crab Salad because the dressing can separate if it sits too long.
You can use fresh, canned, packaged, or imitation crab meat.
When using packaged real crab, lump crab works well because it gives the salad larger pieces and a meatier texture than claw meat.
Imitation crab offers a sweeter, budget-friendly option and usually contains surimi made from processed pollock.
You can replace shallot with finely diced red onion or green onion.
Parsley, chives, or dill all work well as the fresh herb.
You can replace mayonnaise with yogurt or sour cream, including dairy-free alternatives.
Add Old Bay seasoning if you want extra seafood seasoning.
Check package labels carefully when using imitation crab for a gluten-free Crab Salad because some products contain gluten.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
Do not leave this mayonnaise-based salad at room temperature for extended periods.
Freezing is not recommended because the mayonnaise can separate and change the texture.
Serve Crab Salad with crackers, in sandwiches, in wraps, in lettuce leaves, over a bed of lettuce, or alongside vegetables and potatoes.
