Description

This red, white, and blue marble cake is a moist vanilla Bundt cake with bold patriotic colors, perfect for 4th of July parties and summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup butter, room temperature

2 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs, room temperature

4 large egg whites, room temperature

1 cup buttermilk, room temperature

3 cups cake flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

Red food coloring, about 0.25 oz bottle or as needed

Blue food coloring, about half of 0.25 oz bottle or as needed

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and thoroughly grease and flour a 12 cup Bundt pan.

2. Beat the butter and sugar together until fully blended and slightly fluffy.

3. Add the eggs and egg whites one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

4. Mix in the vanilla extract.

5. Stir in the buttermilk until smooth.

6. Add the cake flour, baking powder, and salt, then mix just until combined.

7. Divide portions of the batter into two separate bowls.

8. Tint one portion red and one portion blue, leaving the remaining batter plain.

9. Spoon layers of plain, red, and blue batter into the pan in sequence, using about 1/4 cup each time.

10. Continue layering until all batter is used.

11. Lightly tap the pan to level the batter, but do not swirl.

12. Bake for 50 to 70 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

13. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 15 minutes.

14. Invert the cake onto a rack and let it cool completely before serving.

Notes

Regular or low fat buttermilk both work well.

A homemade buttermilk substitute can be used if needed.

Cake flour gives the cake a softer texture.

Gel food coloring gives stronger color with less product.

Clear vanilla extract can help keep the white batter lighter.

Properly greasing the Bundt pan helps prevent sticking.

This recipe can also make about 12 mini Bundt cakes.

For mini Bundt cakes, bake for about 20 to 25 minutes.

Serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with whipped cream.

Store covered at room temperature for up to 4 days.
