Description

A spooky layered Vampire Halloween Trifle made with red velvet cake, chocolate pudding, whipped topping, crunchy fudge graham crackers, and dark edible blood syrup.

Ingredients

Scale

15.25 oz red velvet cake mix, plus ingredients required by the package, typically water, eggs, and vegetable oil

3 oz instant chocolate pudding mix

2 cups milk

20 fudge-covered graham crackers

8 oz whipped topping, thawed

1/4 cup corn syrup

Red food coloring gel

Black food coloring gel

Optional: candy bones, bone sprinkles, or plastic bones for decoration

Instructions

1. Prepare the red velvet cake according to package directions, making one 8-inch round cake and 12 cupcakes. Let cool completely. Reserve the cupcakes for another use and slice the round cake horizontally into 2 layers.

2. Place one cake layer in the bottom of a trifle dish.

3. Whisk the pudding mix with milk and chill for about 5 minutes until thickened.

4. Spread half of the pudding over the cake layer, then add half of the whipped topping. Crush 10 graham crackers and sprinkle them over the topping.

5. Repeat the layers with the remaining cake, pudding, whipped topping, and crushed crackers, finishing with the cookie layer on top.

6. Mix the corn syrup with red food coloring and a small amount of black food coloring to create a dark blood-like syrup.

7. Dip decorative bones into the syrup and place them into the trifle. Drizzle the remaining syrup over the top.

8. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Remove any plastic decorations before serving.

Notes

Candy bones or bone-shaped sprinkles are recommended instead of plastic bones.

The blood syrup may not adhere well to plastic decorations. Add it shortly before serving for the best appearance.

Using only one 8-inch cake in the trifle provides a better balance of cake, pudding, and topping layers.

The remaining batter is used to make cupcakes to avoid waste.

Individual trifle cups can be assembled using the same layering method.

Store covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Halloween decoration is optional. The dessert can be served year-round without the themed toppings.
